Fluid Contamination Testing

Fluid Contamination Testing, also known as Fluid Susceptibility Testing or Contamination by Fluids Testing, evaluates the ability of materials, components, coatings, seals, and finished products to withstand exposure to various fluids encountered during their operational life. In real-world environments, products are frequently exposed to fuels, lubricants, coolants, cleaning agents, hydraulic fluids, and other chemicals that can adversely affect performance, reliability, and safety. At SKC Group of Labs, we conduct comprehensive fluid contamination testing to assess the resistance of materials and assemblies against chemical exposure, helping manufacturers identify potential weaknesses and improve product durability before deployment.

Why Fluid Contamination Testing is Required

Products operating in automotive, aerospace, defence, industrial, electronics, and transportation sectors are routinely exposed to a wide range of contaminating fluids. Prolonged or accidental exposure can result in material degradation, corrosion, coating failures, and loss of functionality.

Fluid contamination testing helps to:

  • Evaluate the compatibility of materials with operational fluids.
  • Identify potential failures caused by chemical exposure.
  • Verify the effectiveness of protective coatings, seals, and gaskets.
  • Improve product reliability and service life.
  • Support product qualification and regulatory compliance requirements.
  • Reduce field failures and maintenance costs.

The test can identify various adverse effects, including:

  • Corrosion and surface degradation
  • Seal and gasket deterioration
  • Paint and marking removal
  • Material softening, swelling, cracking, or decomposition
  • Packaging failures
  • Temporary or permanent functional impairment of components

Standards Supported

SKC Group of Labs supports fluid contamination testing in accordance with recognized national and international standards, including:

  • EN 2591-315
  • IEC 60068-2-74
  • Method 1016 of MIL-STD-1344A
  • Section 11 of RTCA DO-160G
  • Customer-specific and application-specific test protocols

Customized test programs can also be developed based on product application, operating environment, and customer requirements.
