Introduction
Mould Growth (Fungus) Testing is an important environmental reliability assessment used to evaluate the susceptibility of materials, components, and assemblies to fungal contamination when exposed to warm and humid conditions. Products deployed in defence, aerospace, industrial, telecommunications, and outdoor environments can be vulnerable to fungal growth, which may affect material integrity, appearance, insulation properties, and long-term performance.
At SKC Group of Labs, Mould Growth Testing is conducted under controlled environmental conditions to assess the resistance of products against biological growth and to support qualification requirements for demanding field applications. The test helps manufacturers identify potential material degradation risks and improve product reliability in high-humidity environments.
Mould Growth Test
Objective
The objective of the Mould Growth (Fungus) Test is to determine the ability of materials and components to withstand fungal growth when exposed to conditions that promote mould development. The test was conducted in accordance with JSS 55555:2020 (Fourth Revision), Test Number 21, where the samples were subjected to a controlled environment designed to encourage fungal growth over an extended exposure period.
The evaluation helps assess the suitability of materials for applications where prolonged exposure to moisture and elevated temperatures may occur, ensuring greater confidence in product durability and environmental performance.
Key Result
SKC conducted the Mould Growth (Fungus) Test on IAM Connectors and Accessories submitted for evaluation. The samples were exposed to fungus-promoting environmental conditions for a duration of 28 days in accordance with the specified test requirements.
Upon completion of the test, fungal (mould) growth was observed on the tested samples. The observations were recorded following the specified exposure period and documented through visual inspection and post-test photographs included in the test report. These results provide valuable insight into the behaviour and resistance of materials when subjected to fungus-promoting environmental conditions, enabling manufacturers to assess material suitability for humid and fungus-prone operating environments. The test effectively identifies materials that are susceptible to fungal growth, thereby supporting product reliability improvement, material selection, and compliance with applicable environmental qualification requirements.
